Winter Flowers

I’m lucky enough to live in a part of the country where I can pick a bouquet of hellebores in February. Though our winters in the Pacific Northwest are damp and dark, they aren’t nearly as cold as the winters I grew up with in New York. February is that month of the year where the cold and darkness really starts to get to me. My body literally thirsts for warmth and sunlight. I long to see green leaves on the trees and harvest tender greens from the garden, but we still have a ways to go before that. Being able to pick a bouquet of these moody hued flowers to put on my kitchen table is a beautiful reminder to me that spring is coming. The days are getting longer. The warmth will return once again. For now, enjoy this moment. Even if it’s cold and dark. Because there is beauty in that, even still.
